Doug Smith, age 67, passed away unexpectedly while having dinner with his wife and friends in Bellingham on Saturday, December 1, 2018. Doug had a true servant’s heart, always placing his family’s needs ahead of his own. He poured his quiet wisdom into each of his three girls and nephew, his grandchildren and extended family, and also several mentees throughout his years in business. He was a humble man of great integrity, living out his principles with consistency and kindness. With a sparkle in his eye, his quick wit, and a warm smile, Doug’s sense of humour brought joy and laughter to everyone in his world. He loved learning and you would often find him exploring new ideas from music, language, technology and health, to spiritual truths and world philosophies. His motto in life was “one step at a time,” and he approached all of life’s challenges with tenacity and perseverance. Doug’s rock-solid faith and deep love for the Lord was the foundation of his life and all his actions. All who knew him were drawn to him and
deeply impacted by his example of grace and compassion. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Ellen, three daughters, Karen (Rick) Rauser, Joy (Adam) Carpenter, and Amanda Smith, grandchildren Kayla and Jaxon, mother Neta Bird, brother Dave (Brenda) Smith, sisters Joy (Dave) Gray, Shirley Keehn and her son Brent, and Sandra (Marc) Morin, and many loving relatives and friends.
