Audrey Jean Barton

Audrey Jean Barton passed away peacefully on October 4, 2017 at the age of 94. She was born on May 1, 1923 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan to parents Frederick L. and Nancy Jean Appleton. She grew up in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, the oldest of four siblings. During WWII, Audrey attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1944. She married Kenneth Kooyers and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where she became a US citizen in 1948. After Kenn’s unexpected death, she moved to Bellingham to be closer to her parents who were retired and living in B.C. She married Leo Barton in 1962. Audrey worked at St. Joseph Hospital as an RN for over 25 years until her retirement in 1988. Audrey was a very social person and loved to dance. She enjoyed playing card games with her family and participated in a weekly bridge game for many years. She was active in the community and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for 57 years. Audrey is survived by her four children, Kenn (Sue) Kooyers, Lonna Kooyers, Joel (Becky) Barton and Jack Barton, sister Mavis Baker, and brother Peter (Faye) Appleton. She cherished her six grandchildren, Timothy & Brandon, Sarah & Anna, Jasmin & Josh and her six great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by many loving relatives and friends. Audrey was preceded in death by her first husband Kenneth Kooyers in 1954, second husband Leo Barton in 1974, and her sister Betty Lockwood. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 1 pm on Saturday, October 21st. The Rev. Jonathan Weldon will be officiating. Reception following at the church.
