Beverly A. Zacharias, age 89, passed away on August 15, 2024, in Bellingham, Washington. Beverly was born on May 21, 1935, in Oak Lake, Manitoba, to William and Bertha MacDonald. After staying in Manitoba for a few years, their family moved to Mission, British Columbia where they lived on a small farm. Beverly was very close to her older brother Glenn, and, in their teen years, the two of them could be seen cavorting around town in Glenn’s convertible.
It was at a friend’s wedding that Beverly was introduced to her blind date, Clifford J. Zacharias, a fighter pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force. It wasn’t long after their date when Cliff was promptly stationed in Zweibrücken, Germany. Beverly moved to Montreal to work until she saved enough money to move to London, England. She didn’t know a soul when she arrived but she did make lifelong friends during her two years in London. Cliff and Beverly continued their courtship when she moved to England.
Beverly married Cliff on June 21, 1958, in Mission, British Columbia. She and Clifford lived in a number of locations across Canada before settling in Colorado Springs for 10 years and then Bellingham for 37 years. Every house they lived in was left with a beautiful flower garden, which was Beverly’s chief passion from the time she was a child. Beverly was also committed to her local Anglican and Episcopalian churches, volunteering in a variety of roles, including establishing the Flower Guild at St. Paul’s in Bellingham.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, and her brothers, Glenn and Sherman. She is survived by her three daughters, Gillian of Panicale, Italy and Seattle, WA, Karen of Bellingham, WA, and Lesley (husband Joel) of Bend, OR, and grandchildren, William and Zaiden.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 4 at 1:00pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2117 Walnut St. Bellingham, followed by a committal service and reception.
