07/19/1917 – 10/09/2011
Caroline E. Yurovchak, age 94, passed away at home on October 9, 2011. She was born in Sumas on July 19, 1917, to Louise (Lambert) and Edgar Thomas. Following her graduation from Nooksack-Sumas Union High School in 1934, she attended beauty school in Seattle and practiced in her mother’s beauty shop for the next six years. Caroline also spent 25 years working for the Kelly Farquhar cannery in Ferndale, the last half of that time as a foreman.
On January 18, 1941, she married Andrew Yurovchak, and they had two children, Andy Jr. and Mary Lou. They shared a love of hiking, golf, and bridge.
During her growing-up years Caroline developed a love of reading, games, and sports—all of which lasted her a lifetime. She took up golf in 1941 and played regularly until she was 92. She was the Ladies Club Champion at the Lakeway course three times, and the Bellingham Golf and Country Club’s Caroline Yurovchak Match Play Championship is named in her honor. In 1945 she began playing bridge and became a Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. She played bridge regularly right up to her death.
Caroline also enjoyed travel. With family and friends she visited places near and far, including a Northwest cruise two weeks prior to her passing. She spent the last six and a half years living at The Willows where she made many friends and enjoyed their activities, especially her improv class.
Caroline was preceded in death by her husband Andy in 1988 and by her two sisters, Mary Lou Iverson and Margaret Hunt. She is survived by her son Andy (Lynne) Yurovchak of Bellingham and her daughter Mary Lou (Tom) Jones of Nooksack; her four grandchildren, Tom (Denise Randle) Yurovchak of Hillsboro, Oregon, Dan (Maria) Altman of Bellingham, Pete (Mary Ohnemus) Yurovchak of Pullman, and Ann (Eric Roth) Yurovchak of Kingston plus four great grandchildren.
A celebration of Caroline’s life will be held on Saturday, October 22, at 3 p.m. at Westford Funeral Home, 1301 Broadway Street in Bellingham. A reception will follow across the street at Westford’s Broadway Hall. Memorials in Caroline’s name may be made to Nooksack Valley Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 4337, Nooksack, WA 98276 or to the Bellingham Food Bank, 1824 Ellis Street, Bellingham, WA 98225.
