Charles M. Smith passed away on June 26, 2011 at his home in Bellingham.  He was 45. Charley was born on January 8, 1966 in Madison, West Virginia.  He and his twin brother Harvey brought their mother Amma to Ferndale to visit relatives in 1987.  They liked the area so well they decided to settle down.  Charley’s work revolved mostly around cooking.  He worked at a number of local restaurants including Denny’s, Olive Garden, Best Western, Bellingham Golf and Country Club, and the Inn at Semiahmoo.  He took great care in the preparation and storage of the food he prepared, always making sure to follow all the health rules for keeping food safe and fresh.  Due to an on-the-job injury he had to look for another occupation and decided to begin a series of courses at Mount Vernon Community College one year ago.  He was preparing to become a Pharmacy Technician.
Charley enjoyed listening to “Heavy Metal” bands such as “Kiss”.   His favorite sports teams were the Cincinnati Bengals and the North Carolina Tar Heels.  Another pass time he liked was playing video games such as “Call of Duty”.
Charley was very fond of his pet cat “Buddie” and showed concern for its wellbeing in the event that he was unable to beat his battle with cancer.  Charley had a caring heart and was known as a down-to-earth sort of guy who valued honesty and loyal friends.  He appreciated the care shown to him by two such friends, Andy and Kristi, who had given him a place to live during his illness.  Andy’s sons, Justin and Jason, each gave Charley a nick-name – “Slim” and “Shag”.
He was preceded in death by his father Harry Mitchell, his mother Amma Smith, his brothers George and Harvey, and his aunt and uncle Edith and Elmer Erwin.  In addition to these he also lost a close girlfriend, Trish, to cancer several years ago.  He is survived by his nephew Gabe and sister-in-law Lace Smith, beloved friend Carrie Grinde, his adopted family Andy Neyens, Kristi Hicks and family, and recent girlfriend Christa Campbell who were with him at his passing. He will also be missed by many other friends.
A memorial service will be held at Westford Funeral Home, 1301 Broadway, Bellingham, on July 5, 2011 at  2 PM.   A pot-luck BBQ is planned for Charley’s friends after the service at Andy and Kristi’s house, 4030 Northwest Avenue, Bellingham.
