Dan Zender, age 67 passed away peacefully in Bellingham on August 8, 2011. He was born November 19, 1943 in Bellingham to Dick and Betty (Provost) Zender. Dan graduated from Mt. Baker High School (1962), University of Washington (1967) and Gonzaga University Law School (Magna Cum Laude, 1976). He was active at the local, state and federal levels with endangered species, habitat conservation planning and drafting of policies governing water quality and forest practices. Dan practiced law in Whatcom County as a partner in the Zender-Thurston Law Firm. Dan was a member of the Mt. Baker School Board for 8 years, donated his time to the Deming Log Show, and served on the Character and Fitness Committee for the Washington State Bar Association. He was noted for his positive approach, good judgment, and his ability to see the “big picture.” He enjoyed playing classical guitar, riding horses, and spending time outdoors. Dan loved to tell stories and play with his grandkids. Dan was preceded in death by son Rod, sister Virginia Sauve, and mother Betty. He is survived by his loving wife Mary of 47 years, sons Chris (Donna), Tony (Amy) and Rick, grandchildren Anthony, Alyssa, Cody, Anya, Leland and Lena, father Dick, brother Steve (Kathy), and a large extended family. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation at PO Box 875, Deming, WA 98244, or to the Hope House at Assumption or Whatcom Hospice. A Vigil Service will be held at Church of the Assumption on Thursday, Aug. 11th at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Assumption on Friday, Aug. 12th at 10:30 AM followed by a reception at Westford’s Broadway Hall, 1300 Broadway. Committal will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Deming.
