Dolores McKay, age 97 of Bellingham, passed away November 28, 2010 at Highland Care Center. She was born Sept. 26, 1913, in Bellingham to Hans and Echo (Sieforth) Hanssen. Upon graduating from Whatcom High School in 1931, Dolores attended Western Washington College. Dolores married Floyd Lewis in 1933. They moved to Florida where she opened a knitting shop. They were blessed with their three children; sons Gary and Allan and daughter Jean. In 1949 the family returned to Bellingham and Floyd passed away that same year. Her second husband, J. Allen McKay, passed away in 1978.
Dolores enjoyed knitting, traveling, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Dolores was very active in her church and community as a volunteer. She was a member of Ruth Seabury Circle of First Congregational Church, taught Bible classes, was involved in the Whatcom Literacy Program, served on the board of the YWCA for 8 years, taught knitting classes, helped with the Campfire candy program for several years. She also volunteered for the Cub Scouts, Red Cross, the Heart Fund and Orthopedic Guild, and helped with fund raisers for the Chuckanut Volunteer Fire Dept.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husbands Floyd Lewis and J. Allen McKay, son Gary Lewis and brother George Hanssen. She is survived by her son Allan and his wife Sara Lewis of Snohomish; daughter Jean Lewis of Seattle, numerous grand, great and great-great grandchildren and special friends Jan and Linda Lockhart and Betty Strand of Bellingham.
Memorials may be made to the Whatcom Humane Society, 3710 Williamson Way, Bellingham, WA 98226. A Memorial Service will be held on Sat., Dec. 11th at 11 AM at First Congregational Church, 2401 Cornwall Ave. in Bellingham.
