Don Matyas, age 79 passed away peacefully March 1, 2012 in Bellingham. He was born August 4, 1932 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to Anton and Mary (McHenry) Matyas. Don graduated from Everett High School and Everett Junior College. He also attended Seattle University and Western Washington University. Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He married Susan Gowen on December 22, 1956 at Immaculate Conception Church in Everett. Don was in the grocery industry for many years serving as store manager at Safeway in both Everett and Bellingham. He owned and operated Matyas European Delicatessen and later Anthony’s Typing Service.
He will be remembered for his love of family, his sense of humor and his entertaining storytelling. Don enjoyed many passions including music, sports, acting, writing and gardening. When he was younger, he was very active in all school sports. Don was an exceptional tennis player and continued to play tennis and golf in his later years. He was known as a singer and actor in musicals and plays in high school, college and community theatre. Don was a member of the Assumption Church Choir and a cantor for many years. Don also sang at many weddings, in a barbershop quartet and was a member of the senior center choir. He was a member of Church of the Assumption and the American Legion Post #7.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Susan, children Mary (David) Harris, Anne (John) Bowen, Anton (Traci) Matyas, William M. Matyas, Margaret (Jim) McCleery, grandchildren Evan and Clara Bowen, Josh and Jessica Harris, Taryn, Tyler Lynn and Thea Maloy, Erin René and Dallas Malloy, sister Mary Ann McLamb, numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
A Vigil Service will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 7th at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Church of the Assumption on Thursday, March 8th at 10:30 AM followed by a committal service with military honors at Bayview Cemetery. A reception will follow at Westford’s Broadway Hall, 1300 Broadway. Memorials may be made to Whatcom Hospice House or Assumption School.
