Donald Haggen

Don Haggen, age 80, passed away at his Bellingham home on Friday, August 26, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born March 9, 1931 in Portland, OR to Bennett and Dorothy (Clark) Haggen. Don graduated from Bellingham High School in 1949, and later from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Don served in the U.S. Air Force for 2 years. Don, along with his brother Rick, grew their family business, Haggen, Inc., to be the largest independent grocer in the Northwest.  He served in leadership positions in numerous organizations including the Coca Cola Chairman’s Council, Rotary Club of Bellingham, Western Association of Food Chains, Mt. Baker Scout Foundation, Western Washington University Foundation and the Peace Health St. Joseph Hospital Governing Board.  Don has received numerous awards including the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award for his business achievement and community service, and the Whatcom County Lifetime Business Achievement Award. He enjoyed fishing with family and friends at Langara, B.C., crabbing from his home on Chuckanut Bay, the annual family trip to Kona Village, vacationing in Arizona, and attending UW football and basketball games.  Don is survived by his wife of 28 years, Kathryn; five sons, Brad (Kristin), Jeff (Karen), Andy (Michael-Ann), Gregg (Cindy) and Dave (Heather); 10 grandchildren, Tanya, Jake, Jesse, Sarah, Matt, Tyler, Maya, Sidney, Kai and Isaac, Kathryn’s daughter Danielle Larson (Tony) and their children Bronte and Jonathan; brother, Rick (Sylvia); sister, Mary King (Frank), and a loving extended family.  Special thanks to the EMT’s of the Whatcom County Fire Department for their kindness and compassion. Memorials in Don’s name may be made to the Mt. Baker Area Council of the Boy Scouts, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bellingham on Thursday, September 1st at 10:30 AM followed by a reception in the Great Hall.
