Dorothy L. Brown, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was called home as she slept peacefully on Friday, December 30, 2016. Dorothy was born in Caddo, Texas on May 29, 1919 to Allen and Rose (Clinton) McDowell. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Elma and Gene Wyek in Newhall, CA. As a school teacher in public education, Dorothy began her teaching career at Saratoga, CA and later taught in Burlingame CA. Dorothy retired from her last position teaching incarcerated youth at the county boys’ ranch in Florence OR. Dorothy was a longtime member of St. James Presbyterian Church. She loved her family, her garden, her community, and traveling widely. She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Jack Tyler Brown, and her grandson, Matthew Tyler Downing. She is survived by her daughter Nancy (Robert) Pace, of Bellingham, grandchildren Todd (Raechelle) Downing of Port Orchard, Gavin (Michelle) Downing of Seattle, and Sara Downing Nolan of Bellingham, three great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Kayleigh Downing and Zadra Nolan, half-sister Muriel Jacobsen of Flagstaff AZ, and numerous loved nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at St. James Presbyterian Church, 910 14th Street in Bellingham. A reception will follow.
