Duane Clinton Schenck, lifetime resident of Bellingham, WA, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born in Bellingham on March 17, 1938, to Margaret (Stoddard) and William “Win” Schenck. He married Gloria Pederson, his lifelong love, on November 14, 1959.
Duane served on the Bellingham Police Force for 36 years. He started as a beat cop and worked through the ranks from motorcycle patrol, then to sergeant as a juvenile officer, continuing onto chief of detectives, before becoming captain of patrol. He finally retired in 1997 as deputy chief.
Duane was an active participant in all things sports. He was a 3-sport letterman achieving all state status as a football player at Mt. Baker High, leading to two years of Western Washington State College football. His love of sports led him to being active in coaching youth sports for over 65 years. He coached his children, grandchildren, and many, many more. He was an active lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Duane was preceded in death by his mother Margaret, father Win, sister Jackie, brother Dale, and stepfather Dale Collman. Duane is survived by his wife Gloria, children Greg (Corinne) Schenck, Lori (Mark) Olson, and Gary Schenck, grandchildren Karly (Clay) Brannen, Taylor Schenck, Tanner (Kaitlyn), Chase, Kolby (Caitlyn) Olson, Sadie, and April Schenck, great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Jett Brannen, and baby Cayden, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many great-granddogs.
Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Bellingham Police Association, or Mt. Baker
High School Athletic Booster Club.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 10, 2024, at 2:00pm at Faith Lutheran Church in Bellingham, WA.
