Edwina Barnsley, age 89, passed away on August 11th, 2012 in Bellingham, WA. She was born April 17, 1923 in Santa Fe, Argentina to Muriel and Edwin Cook. She was raised in Sussex, England. Edwina joined the British Women’s Royal Air Force during WWII. She married Dr. Alan Barnsley (novelist Gabriel Fielding) in 1943.Following the war, she and her husband resided in Maidstone, England where she began raising her children and serving as a busy doctor’s wife and editor until 1966. Edwina and her family then moved to Pullman, Washington where she lived until 2001. In 2001 she moved to Bellingham, Washington to be closer to her daughters’ families. Edwina was a devout Roman Catholic convert, and a compassionate humanitarian; she left a 14 child legacy of perpetual sponsorship to Childfund International. She wrote 3 books, taught cooking and catholic catechism classes, loved gardening, lead prayer and literature groups, and assisted her husband with his creative writing classes. She cooked numerous incredible feasts for family, friends and students at WSU. She typed and brilliantly edited her husband’s novels, short stories and poetry. Edwina was preceded in death by her husband Alan, grandson Edward, daughter Felicity and her two sisters Elizabeth Molyneux and Phillipa Forwood. She is survived by her children: Michael (wife Louisa), Jonathan, Simon (wife Julia), Mary Gabriel (husband Douglas), son-in-law Bruce Morris, grandchildren: Diana Fleming (husband Gray) and Rose Barnsley; Elizabeth, Katherine and Andrew Morris; Josephine, Madeline and James Vorenkamp; Jake, Charlie and Colette Fleming; Brother Arthur Cook and many more friends and relatives. . A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Assumption in Bellingham, WA on Saturday August 18th at 11 AM followed by a reception at the home of Douglas and Gabriel Vorenkamp: 3615 S. Heather Place in Bellingham, WA.
