June 6, 1917 — February 10, 2011

6/6/1917 – 2/10/2011
The daughter of Alphia and Edward Hughes, Elizabeth (Bette to friends and family), was born on the Samish flats at Blanchard, WA in her grandfather’s oyster shack at the Pearl Oyster Company (now Taylor Shellfish).  A lifelong Bellingham resident, Bette graduated from Whatcom High School in 1935.  She met Leon, her husband of 72 years, as a student at Bellingham Normal School (now WWU).  Bette and Leon were married in 1939 at South Bend, WA.  After WWII they bought property on Sehome Hill and built the family home.  Bette enjoyed spending years as a Pink Lady volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital.  She cherished her relationships with charities and organizations, The Daughters of the King, and The Aftermath Club.  Bette truly loved the San Juan Islands where she spent her childhood summers at Blakely Island and later years at Shoal Bay on Lopez Island where Bette and Leo built a home on the homestead property.
She was preceded in life by her brother Bill Hughes; sisters Evelyn Hughes and Virginia Hughes Michaelson; and her niece Julie Hughes Aydelotte.  Bette is survived by her dear husband Leon Alpaugh; brother Bob Hughes (Donnie); sister-in-law Alene Tomich; nephews & nieces Jeff Hayward-Hughes (Cathy), Steve Hughes (Leslie), Monty Hughes (Cindy), Jim Michaelson, John Michaelson (Sandy), Rob Michaelson (Karol), Susan Lindahl (Keith), Jennifer Lindahl, Stephanie Lindahl (Justin,) and Clark Lindahl; and many great nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts may be sent to St. Paul’s Endowment Fund; 2117 Walnut St., Bellingham, WA 98225.
