Elsie M. Stewart

Elsie M. Stewart, age 97, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2016 in Marysville, WA. Elsie was born February 18, 1919 in Sumas, WA to Frank and Minnie Gildersleeve.

She married Richard E. Stewart in Yuma, AZ on August 19, 1940 while Richard was serving in the Marine Corps. Elsie traveled throughout the United States (mostly by herself) following Richard during his ten year tour of duty. During this time she gave birth to three of her children. The family moved to Hawaii in 1946 where her fourth child was born. After eight years on Maui they moved to Bellingham.

Elsie worked for the City of Bellingham for 25 years before retiring in 1980. The first four years as secretary to Mayor Sig Hjaltalin before moving to the city clerk’s office. Elsie was a member of the Rome Grange for 57 years and a long-time member of the Maple Leaf Chapter of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 2008.

She is survived by her children Larry (Pam) Stewart of Lake Stevens, Ken (Elaine) Stewart of Australia, Linda (Bob) Torgerson of Chelan, WA, and Corinne Miller of Portland, OR; grandchildren Ken, Kevin, Scott, Paul, David, Lance, and Genevieve, five great-grandchildren, and many loving relatives and friends.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Westford Funeral Home at 1 PM on Saturday, July 16th.
