Born in Gumaca in the Philippines, Giovanni Saturay passed away on October 20, 2024 at Whatcom Hospice House in Bellingham with his family by his side. We will miss his loving and generous spirit and, most importantly, the sparkle in his eyes when he saw his children, grandchildren, friends, and family.
Giovanni grew up on his grandfather's property where he rode horses, started a rose garden with his Nanay (mother), and began his schooling. When the war reached the property in 1941, his life changed. He hid in the jungles to ensure his family’s safety. It was a defining period for him. He wrote, “After this time, life to me is sweet, happy living."
After the war, he continued his education and helped his parents raise his 11 siblings. Giovanni graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He became the first and only Filipino engineer to be granted a scholarship by the Federation of British Industries in Manchester, U.K.
After returning from England in 1963, he married the love of his life, Belen, and ever since they worked to create more opportunities for their five children. He took a leap of faith and moved his family to the U.S. in 1973 and settled in Bellingham in 1974. He retired as a project engineer for British Petroleum Cherry Point. Giovanni loved to travel and was an avid golfer (he's had several holes-in-one!). He also played tennis and was an all-around sports enthusiast. He achieved one of his lifetime goals, putting all five of his kids through college. Go Dawgs! You did it Dad! We are who we are because of your sacrifices and the love that you created.
He is preceded in death by his Tatay Federico and his Nanay Caridad; brothers Louie, Oscar, and Conrado; and his sister Melchora.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Belen; children, Enrico, Rowena, Alan (Nancy), Noel (Kate), and Tina (Aaron); and his dear apos (grandchildren), Victoria, Keona, Angelo, Luke, and Sidra.
