Grace Anna Nelson died peacefully on September 8, 2012. Greeting her in glory were her beloved husband of sixty years, Les Nelson, her mother, Anna, her two beloved aunts Edie and Flossie, not to mention a fleet of small dachshunds. Born Grace Sommer on September 6, 1917 in Northport, WA, Grace lived in Everett, graduating from the University of Washington and teaching in Aberdeen. When Grace and Les married, they traveled with his army duties—to Richmond, VA, and Boulder, CO. They then moved to Salem, OR, Yakima, WA and then Bellingham, WA where Grace taught HomeEc and English for many years. Grace and Les enjoyed boating, crabbing and fishing from their cabin on Davison Head, San Juan Island. She is survived by three children—Bruce Nelson of Everson (and wife Denise whom she treasured to the end); Mary Ellen Ashcroft of Grand Marais, MN; Kent Nelson of Reno, NV, not to mention grandchildren Andrew Ashcroft of Grand Marais, MN, Stephen Ashcroft (wife Anna) of Minneapolis, MN, and Susannah Kallaus (husband Chris) of Minneapolis, MN, Ben and Dan Nelson of Bellingham and April Mason (husband John) of Nooksack, WA. Great-grandchildren include Esme Ashcroft, Tucker Kallaus, Henry Ashcroft, Shelby and Mallory Mason, and Madison and Tiffany Nelson. She loved gardening, sewing, boating, painting, reading, playing bridge and her many friends. Grace was involved at First Presbyterian Church as a deacon for many years. The family would like to thank Jack Arntzen and to the staff at A Loving Heart Adult Family Home for all the love and care they gave to Grace. A memorial service was held at 2 PM on Saturday, September 15th at First Presbyterian Church, 1031 North Garden St, Bellingham. Memorials preferred to the Lighthouse Mission.
