Harriett Ann Green

July 30, 1933 — July 13, 2023

Harriett Ann Green, age 89, has entered into the arms of Jesus. Just shy of her 90th birthday, she was grateful to have lived in the comfort of her own home until her passing on July 13, 2023.

Harriett was born on July 30, 1933 in Laurens, South Carolina to William and Mattie Dawkins. She continued her route westward, ending up in Bellingham, Washington, where she worked as Vice President of Northwestern Commercial Bank, now US Bank in downtown Bellingham.

In the mid-1970s she met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Green. They married soon after they met and spent 25 wonderful years together until Dick’s passing on July 23, 2000. Harriett and Dick loved to travel, always meeting forever friends along the way. They took many cruises across the globe, enjoying those precious times together.

Harriett had a special twinkle in her eyes, a beautiful smile on her face, and was a friend to everyone she met. She was active in the Soroptimist International Society of America, Whatcom Hospice, Whatcom County Cancer Center, The Salvation Army Advisory Board, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She and Dick spent many happy years at their cabin in Concrete on the Skagit River. Many of her fondest memories were formed there at the cabin, spending time with her friends and family.

On warm afternoons, her favorite pastimes were gardening, yardwork, being outside, and socializing with her neighbors over a “tiddly” (usually a martini or glass of wine).

Harriett was especially grateful for Dick’s son Jim, who was her grocery boy, plumber, electrician, and maintenance guy. But most of all, he was her advocate, providing her love, care, and comfort when she needed it most. Whenever anyone talked to her about a maintenance problem, Harriett would say, “I’ll call Jim. He can fix anything.” If he didn’t bring his yellow lab, Gracie, with him to visit her, before she would even say hello, she would say “Where’s Gracie?” Her caregivers loved Gracie and would lock Jim out if he didn’t bring her. Harriett loved to give Jim a hard time and they shared many laughs and jokes right up until her passing.

She is survived by her older brother, Henry (Betty) Dawkins, sister-in-law Judy Dawkins, and Dick’s son, Jim (Mary) Green.

Harriett is preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick Green, and brother Mike Dawkins.

She was extremely grateful for the professional and loving care provided by her many caregivers allowing her to fulfill her wishes to remain in her home. Susie, Anjella, Genno, Rowena, Carol, and Mara were her special angels the last few months of her life. Hospice care was outstanding and she was especially fond of Deb, her compassionate nurse.
