James Patterson McDonald passed away on Sunday June 10, 2012 after a short illness. He was born in Bellingham on January 26, 1928 to J. Ivan McDonald and Iva (Gilfilen) McDonald.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1962 and father in 1971; grandparents R.Edgar Gilfilen in 1943, Alpha (Leadmon) Gilfilen of Silver Beach-Bellingham, WA in 1953, James McDonald in 1922, and Nellie (Patterson) McDonald of Clipper, WA in 1953; sister Jacqueline Sue Burt in 2007; brother-in-law Lanny MacDonald in 2003; nephew Danny Maultsby in 1999; cousin & shooting buddy Jack Patterson Nims in 1991 and bartender and fishing buddy Jim Engelhardt in 1991.
At age 17, Jim joined the U.S. Marine Corps during the last months of WWII. He served aboard the USS Wisconsin (BB-64) and later attended the U of W. He had many careers, including grocery store manager, bakery driver-salesman for Langendorf Bakeries, land developer, and orchardist (in Tonasket, WA).
Jim was proud of his Whatcom County heritage as the great-grandson of James Patterson, the first settler and founder of the county’s dairy industry and Elizabeth, the daughter of Chief PatKanim of the Snoqualmie, one of the most powerful native leaders in western Washington in the 1850’s.
Throughout his life Jim has enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, trap shooting, golf and cooking. He was a member of the NRA, USS Wisconsin Assn., American Legion, Washington State Horticulture Assn. and past member of the Bellingham Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Peggy; sister Patricia A. McDonald of Lynden; nieces Kathleen Maultsby of Tucson, AZ and Mary Hess (Steve) of Maple Valley, WA; grandniece and nephews Robert, Tim, and R.J. Maultsby all of AZ and Alex Hess of CA, Melissa and Robin Hess of Maple Valley, WA; cousins Robert LaPlant and Ralph (Bea) Gilfilen of Bellingham; sisters-in-law Yvonda (Dave) Anderson, Erlene (Bruce) Read, and Nancy MacDonald; nieces and nephews Eric (Ann) Anderson, Brad (Diana) Anderson, Karen (Steve) Epperson, Kathy (Bill) Hawbaker, Dan (Diane) Anderson, Barb (Pete) Young, Mark (Debra) Lindquist, and Keevan (Carol) Lindquist and several great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 11am on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Westford’s Broadway Hall, 1300 Broadway in Bellingham. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion. Reception to follow.
