Janet Taylor

October 27, 1945 — December 16, 2011

10/27/1945 – 12/16/2011
Janet was born in Orange, New Jersey to E.V. and Lee Huggins. Janet passed away peacefully at Whatcom Hospice House with her loving husband Dan and friends at her side. Janet and Dan met in 1966 sailing around the world on a brigantine, and married two years later after Janet finished her degree at Wellesley College. They lived in New Bedford, Chapel Hill, San Antonio, and Seattle, before settling in Bellingham in 1986. In 2001, they moved into Bellingham Cohousing, where they have been invaluable members of the community, and where Janet will be deeply missed.
Janet never saw herself in a traditional career, and she considered being a mother her highest calling in life. A woman acutely interested in the world around her, she held a variety of jobs in addition to “mom.” Of the myriad occupations she performed—including Hellerwork practitioner, veterinary technician, drum maker, and hospice volunteer—one of her favorites was as the secretary of the Department of Religion, UNC-Chapel Hill. She was an intellectually rigorous and curious person and a voracious reader who studied a wide variety of topics. She had a strong, decades-long interest in spirituality, and in the early 2000s Janet was baptized as a Christian.
Janet had a great love of life. In addition to a passion for reading, she loved music, gardening, kayaking, small-boat sailing, motorcycling (prior to being a mom), bicycling, road trips through the Southwest, hiking, and horseback riding. She had the calmness and focus to spend all day at the beach collecting tiny shells, but also the energy to do light trail running in the hills around Bellingham, until this October when she was weakened by cancer. Janet’s studies of death and dying, coupled with her faith, allowed her to embrace her terminal diagnosis and the last phase of her journey with conviction and a sense of exploration, bringing great comfort to her family.
In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by her brother Ken of Jamestown, North Carolina, sons Nat and Ian, daughters-in-law Karissa and Calin, and granddaughter Lexi, all of Seattle. A Celebration of Janet’s Life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, 355 Harris Avenue in Bellingham. Memorials may be made to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation.
