10/23/1932 – 2/4/2011
John Wilson Abbott passed away peacefully on February 4, 2011, surrounded by his family. He fought a long and courageous battle with many illnesses, always showing his great faith in God and his own healing strengths. John was born in O’Neill, Nebraska on October 23, 1932. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy, sons Rick, Trace and Kevin (Darcy), grandchildren Lacey, Ryan, and Taylor, siblings Jackie, Eldon, Mary, Gene (Duane and Vernon, deceased) and their families. Also Dorothy’s sisters and their husbands and families, whom he considered his own family.
John served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Marine Corps in Korea. John graduated from BHS in 1951, WWU in 1958 and had many additional years of education. John retired from the Meridian School District in 1988 after 30 years as a successful teacher, counselor, coach and mentor to many students. He spent many summers logging, fishing and working as a strawberry boss. John was active in church work as a superintendent, teacher, committees and board member. John and Dorothy enjoyed many years traveling abroad, (mostly in warm, tropical climates) and in the U.S. John’s family and friends were the world to him. His big smile, genuine kindness, wonderful sense of humor and love of life touched everyone who knew him.
The family wishes to thank all those visitors who came to see John and share their fond memories of his life. It was a true testament to how much he was loved by all. He would probably say to those left behind “I’ve had a life of love and laughter and had many wonderful experiences so don’t fret. I am with the Lord in Heaven and filled with joy and peace.”
Memorials may be made to Hospice House, 800 E. Chestnut St. Suite 1-A, Bellingham, WA, 98225.
A Celebration of John’s life will be held at Christ the King in Bellingham on Monday, February 14th at 1 PM followed by a reception at VFW Post 1585, 652 N. State Street in Bellingham.
