John M. Gagne, age 81 of Bellingham, WA, died on June 20, 2011. He was born on June 6, 1930 at St. Lukes Hospital in Bellingham, the second child born to Archie and Gertrude (McIrvin) Gagne. John attended Whatcom County schools and graduated from Bellingham High School, Class of 1948. He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in civil engineering, and earned a military commission of second lieutenant. While attending the U of W, during the summers John worked for Pacific American Fisheries Canneries of Alaska.
John served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War. In 1955 he joined the Army Reserve and retired in 1980 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1956, John was hired by the Washington Department of Transportation, where he worked for 26 years, retiring in 1982.On October 7, 1961, John married Gilda Bright and together they enjoyed traveling, fishing, R.V.ing, and spending time at their cabin on North Pender Island in Canada.
John was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Albert J. Hamilton Post # 7 of the American Legion. John was preceded in death by his wife Gilda in 2010. He is survived by nieces Sue Johnston, Lynn Keith and Pam Brantley, nephews Rod Freeman and Jeff Freeman, several great-nieces and nephews, step-daughter, Sherri Jerene (husband Ted) Parker, grandson Brett (wife Rachel) Parker and their children Jack, Kieran and Lucas, grandson Brandon Parker and his sons Joshua and Caleb.   Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Endowment Fund or the Disabled American Veterans. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, June 30th at 11:30 AM followed by a reception in the Great Hall. The Rev. Jonathan Weldon will be officiating.
