Keith William "Hans" Hanson, 89, of Bellingham, passed away on January 21, 2025. Born February 3, 1935, in Olympia, Hans lived a life marked by athletic achievement, entrepreneurial spirit, and dedicated service to others.
A standout athlete at Bellingham High School and the University of Washington, Hans excelled in multiple sports and achieved remarkable success as a Golden Gloves boxer, winning 99 of 100 matches at the Washington Athletic Club. He balanced his college years between Sigma Nu fraternity, football, and summers spent commercial fishing.
After trying out for the Oakland Raiders, Hans built a successful career that culminated in founding Hans Hanson Landscaping. His innovative spirit led him to patent the "Hanson Shovel" edging tool after retiring in 2005.
Hans's greatest legacy was his 67-year commitment to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, where he championed programs helping children with disabilities. His dedication earned him "Elk of the Year" honors at both lodge and state levels (1984-1985).
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Barbara (Ceragioli) Hanson; daughter, Korrin Bizek and son-in-law Lee; grandchildren, Peyton and Jackson; and sister, Joan Walker. He was preceded in death by his son, Hans Derek Hanson, and his parents Oscar and Alice (Evertz) Hanson.
Hans found joy in simple pleasures: tending his tomato plants, maintaining his "seven aching acres," and enjoying peaceful moments on his riding lawnmower. His dedication to family, service, and community will be deeply missed.
An Elks Service honoring Hans will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at the Bellingham Elks (710 S Samish Way). He will be laid to rest at Greenacres Memorial Park during a private Catholic committal service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington State Therapy Program/Tall Elks, c/o Bellingham Elks Lodge #194.
