Leroy A. Carlson

Leroy Carlson, age 94, passed away in Bellingham on November 5, 2024. A lifelong resident of Whatcom County, Leroy was born to parents Arthur and Josephine (Koloski) Carlson on April 15, 1930. 

Raised by his grandparents, Leroy learned the value of hard work while helping his grandfather operate an 85-acre dairy farm. After high school, Leroy served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Following his service, he was a dedicated employee of GP for over 35 years and he was an active member of the Assumption Catholic Church throughout his life.

Fondly known throughout town as “The Turtle Man,” Leroy spent much of his time in retirement crafting turtles and buzzards from shells, crab claws, and other treasures found at the beach. Growing up in poverty, he knew what it meant to live without the comforts and security many take for granted. His compassion and empathy led him to volunteer his time and proceeds. All money raised from his crafting hobby was donated to help those in need through the Bellingham Food Bank and other charities. 

Fond of the outdoors, Leroy and his family spent many summers camping and fishing. Later in life, he and Ann visited many states in their RV. As an avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed participating in the hiking club at the senior center. After their travel days were behind them, Leroy and Ann could often be found walking at Boulevard Park and enjoying local music venues.

Leroy is survived by his beloved wife, Ann; children, David (Sarah), Tim, Susan (Rufus), and Linda (Doug); grandchildren, Lacie, Ayesha, Royal, Allie, Andrew, Jack, Tatum, Madison, Wyatt, and Jesse; and great-grandchildren, Skyla, Emmet, Sawyer, and Jaden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the Bellingham Food Bank or your local food bank.

A vigil will be held at 6:00pm on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Westford Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30am on Friday, Nov. 15 at Church of the Assumption in Bellingham followed by a graveside committal with military honors at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale.
