“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
With unbearable sadness, we announce that Mandy Leslie Cox has returned to her spiritual home, leaving behind a magnificent legacy of unconditional love. Mandy passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 65, while at her home in Bellingham, WA in the company of her husband, mother, and nephew. Mandy was born on March 21, 1959 in Stuart, VA to Thelma Leslie Hall Cox (Darling) and Joel Conner Cox, Jr. Mandy lived a deeply spiritual life filled with tremendous passion, joy, and love for ‘all creatures great and small’.
Mandy was a graduate of Middleton High School in Charleston, SC and Clemson University and began working at Price Waterhouse in 1981. It was at her first day in her new career where Mandy met her best friend, soulmate, love of her life, and beloved husband of nearly 42 years, Larry Horowitz. Mandy & Larry had a whirlwind, long-distance romance, and married in Williamsburg, VA on July 9, 1983.
Mandy & Larry began married life together in Charlotte, NC where they lived for 14 years and where Mandy worked as a financial executive for a software company and real estate development firm. In 1997, they purchased a home on Lake Toxaway, NC where they spent four glorious years surrounded by extraordinary beauty and nature. After traveling to the Pacific Northwest to commune with the Salish Sea’s Orca whales, Mandy & Larry experienced a strong connection to the area and re-settled in Bellingham, WA in 2001.
Mandy was extremely creative, and she meticulously designed several unique and artistic studios within her home to work on her ‘projects’. Mandy’s most recent project “Bracelets of Light” saw Mandy designing and creating beautiful and meaningful stone and bead bracelets, many of which are cherished and worn by family and friends.
One of her closest friends refers to Mandy as simply “Pure Love” and the “sweetest and most loving friend a person could ever have.” Although Mandy returned to her spiritual home far too soon - and we all miss her terribly - she will live in our hearts forever.
Upon Mandy’s return to her spiritual home, she will be met by those who preceded her, including her father, Joel Conner Cox, Jr.; Thomas Darling, who was married to Mandy’s mother for more than 50 years; and both sets of grandparents (Cox & Hall).
Mandy is survived by her loving husband, Larry Horowitz; mother Thelma Darling; brother Joel Conner Cox, III; sister Deborah Lynn Cox; mother-in-law Edythe Caldwell; sisters-in-law Sheri Cox, Mindy Horowitz, and Pamela Smith; and nephews Matthew Gustafson, Joel Conner Cox, IV, Peter Gustafson, and Brandon Cox.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mandy's memory may be made to Protect Mud Bay Cliffs, a local preservation project close to Mandy’s heart that Mandy & Larry have been actively involved with.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 1:00pm at Westford Funeral Home, 1301 Broadway, Bellingham, WA, with a reception following.
