04/10/1936 - 11/12/2011
Marguerite Brockmann, age 75, went home to be with her Lord on November 12, 2011, peacefully surrounded by love at the Hospice House in Bellingham, Washington.
Marg was born April 10, 1936 in Junction City, Kansas, the first child of Roy and Margaret Jahnke. She grew up on a working dairy farm, and was an exemplary student and 4-H champion. She graduated from Kansas State University in 1958 with a degree in education. She taught elementary school for several years while her husband was finishing medical school.
She met Rupert Brockmann from Wyoming on a trip to Washington D.C. in 1955, both of them representing their respective states at a national 4-H conference. He wrote letters and visited her every chance he got, including driving his own mother to Kansas to visit relatives and just swinging by her parent’s farm 100 miles away. He was “the love of her life.” Rupert – “Brock”- and Marguerite were married June 7, 1959, and enjoyed 52 wonderful years together.
Marg had three children and devoted her life to instilling in them her unwavering belief that each one could accomplish and achieve whatever they put their mind to. Marguerite couldn’t be happier than when she was spending time with her children or grandchildren at various events and activities. She loved flowers, gardening, and music. She was a life-long learner and natural teacher. She touched the life of everyone she came in contact with through her beautiful smile, graciousness, practical intelligence, quiet strength, warmth, and faith.
She and Brock lived in Denver, Colorado and Portland, Oregon in the early years of their marriage, then made their home and raised their children in Spokane, Washington. They made a family gathering and vacation spot of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and spent decades of shared laughter, meals, and warm connections there. In later life they became “snowbirds” and spent many happy winters in Green Valley, Arizona with family and friends. Marg and Brock moved to Bellingham in 2010 to be closer to family.
She was preceded in death by her brother Samuel Jahnke (Mary). She is survived by her caring husband Rupert “Brock” Brockmann and her three loving children: Bruce Brockmann (Allison) of Calgary, Alberta, Kathryn Wade (Steve) of Chehalis, Washington, and Laurie Brockmann of Bellingham, Washington. She has eight grandchildren, each and every one her favorite: Sarah, Jay and Camille; Nathan, Brock and Lauren; Kate and Lucas. She is also survived by her sisters Carol Manz (Terry), Fern Freeman (Ross), and Julia Woolfolk (Dave), Brock’s two sisters and four brothers, their spouses, and many loving nieces and nephews.
She said on many occasions since learning of her terminal disease: “I’ve had a happy, full life. I have no regrets.” She had a strong faith in God and believed He was with her and waiting for her with open arms. She will leave a void and we will carry her in our hearts always.
A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday November 16 at 2 pm at the Birchwood Presbyterian of Bellingham, Washington, with Pastor Bud Lee serving as celebrant.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation:
