Marjorie (“Margie”) Joseph was born in San Francisco on December 9th, 1924. She died on July 4th, 2013 after being ill for several months. She was the only child of Edna and George Waterman, growing up during the Great Depression and living in various communities in California which included Oakland, Pasadena, and Los Angeles. Her father had a successful retail hearing aid business, and her mother was engaged in various community activities. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the 1940s and was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, and subsequently got married and raised her two children in West Los Angeles. Although she was not a religious person, she was very proud of her Jewish heritage and was an active member of Hadassah, an organization that raises money for Israel, for a number of years. Many of her surviving friends in Los Angeles worked with her in this organization.
In mid-life Margie published several articles in various Southern California newspapers displaying her wit and sense of humor. One was entitled “The Terror of Cooking the Holiday Bird,” where she described her experiences and anxieties surrounding the preparation of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. After her marriage ended in the early 1970s, Margie worked in the banking and loan industries. Although a longtime resident of Southern California, in her later years she moved to the state of Washington in order to be closer to her daughter and her family. She lived in Bellingham from 1998 until her death. She was a loving and devoted mother, and she adored her two grandchildren.
As she requested, she was cremated and her remains will be scattered at sea at a later date. A memorial gathering is being planned.
She is survived by her two children: James J. Joseph, of Oakland, California, and Nancy L. Joseph of Bellingham, Washington, and her two grandchildren, Adam E. Joseph of San Ramon, California, and Jordan J. Smith of Bellingham, Washington.
