Mildred Edwards, age 98, passed away December 22, 2010 in Bellingham. She was born May 16, 1912 in a “soddie” in the Sand Hills of Nebraska to Frederich and Beatrice (Griffith) Duis. When her parents died during the flu pandemic, Mildred’s aunt Grace and her husband brought her to Bellingham where she grew up and lived most of her life.
Mildred’s greatest passions in life were being a nurse and being a mom to her three children. Mildred graduated from Virginia Mason Hospital School of Nursing in Seattle and worked as an R.N. After a hiatus from nursing to raise her family, she returned to the profession she loved, nursing, and later worked as a Nursing Home Administrator at St. Francis. Mildred was a mother devoted to her family. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and painting in oils. Mildred was calm, steady, and always a lady. She lived a long, productive, and satisfying life.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry W. Edwards, aunt Grace Griffith Pike and her husband Gordon, brother George and sister Beatrice. She is survived by sons James D. (Kathy) Edwards and Michael D. Edwards, daughter Bonnie (Randy) Edwards Schultz, grandchildren Kathy Lynn, Dale, Brenda, Sherry, Valerie, Victoria, Danielle and Michaela, sister Gladys, and many great-grandchildren and other family members.
A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale on Friday, January 7thst at 2 PM.
