Nancy Carol Holl passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 20th at age 73, surrounded by her loving family, after eight years of treatment for metastatic ovarian cancer. Nancy was born in Sedro Woolley to newspaper owners Ernest and Helen “Lucile” Emerson. In her youth, she enjoyed cycling, snowskiing, and summers at the family cabin on Lake Samish. Nancy attended Burlington-Edison High School and University of Puget Sound. She took pride serving with Rainbow Girls and made lifelong friends in Chi Omega. Nancy taught elementary school in Merced, California and Lynnwood, Washington before returning to Lake Samish where she raised two sons with her beloved husband Michael. For four months out of eight, she raised them alone while Michael worked at sea in Asia. Nancy spent countless hours volunteering for Faith Lutheran Church and other local organizations benefiting women, children, and the underprivileged. She also gave time to local PTSAs and fire departments. She enjoyed gardening, reading, collecting rocks, researching her ancestry, and the company of friends, neighbors, and family. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Michael Holl, parents Ernest and Helen Emerson, brother Kenneth Emerson, sister Helen Guggemos, and brother-in-law Robert Higgs. She is survived by her son Eric Holl and his wife Jessica Lohafer, son Alan Holl, and sister Dorothy Higgs. A memorial service and reception will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Friday, October 26th at 11:00 AM. To honor her memory, Nancy wishes that we reach out to friends old and new, provide companionship to the elderly, and support those in need. Memorial donations may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Interfaith Coalition of Whatcom County, The Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation, and SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention. The family would like to thank the loving staff of Whatcom Hospice for their care and support in Nancy’s final months.
