Nick was born December 22, 1932 in Edmonton, Alberta and died June 8, 2012 in Bellingham, Washington. He was the son of Nicholas and Eleanor MacPhee. He grew up in Spokane and graduated from Lewis and Clark high school in 1950. Nick graduated from the University of Washington in 1954 where he formed lifetime friendships as a member and President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and where he also met his future wife, Frances Herb, whom he wed in 1955. He was commissioned as an officer and served on active duty as a United States Air Force pilot. In 1960 Nick and Fran moved to Bellingham where he worked for Georgia Pacific Corporation. In 1966 he began a career in the food processing industry. He was a member of the National Canners Association, National Frozen Food Association, was director and President of the Northwest Food Processors Association and member of the “Sun Valley Gang” industry association. He was elected into membership of the Young Presidents Organization in 1975. His civic affiliations include lifetime memberships to the Washington Athletic Club where he served on the Board of Governors, the University of Washington Alumni Association and Tyee Club, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity Alumni Association and the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. Nick served on the Board of Trustees of the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce. He was on the Board of Directors of the Bellingham YMCA, Bellingham Rotary Club and Junior Achievement of Bellingham.
Nick is survived by Fran, his wife of 56 years, his son Nick (late wife Meagan) and their children Riley and Casey of Seattle; daughter Kathy Heinrich and her children Kelli, Kayla, Taylor and J.J. of Seattle; daughter Julie MacPhee of Bellingham; daughter Molly Bulloch, her husband George and their children Katie and Laura of Seattle; daughter Connie Hodgson, her husband Gregor and their children Lindsay and Jaclyn of Bellingham; and son Dan, his wife Teri and their children Madison and Nicholas of Bellingham. He is also survived by his sister Marty Durant and her husband Terry of Connecticut and their three sons.
Nick treasured his family and loved vacations with them in Hawaii and Arizona, golfing trips with his sons including a special one to Ireland, Husky football and playing with his grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.com . A Memorial Service will be held at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, June 13th at 1 PM, followed by a reception. You may share memories with the family at www.westfordfuneralhome.com .
