03/11/1925 - 03/07/2013
Pat O’Brien passed away peacefully on March 7, 2013, just shy of her 88th birthday. She was born in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in Mansfield, Ohio. Her father, Milo William Hieber, was a World War I aviator and business man. Pat’s mother, Anna Elizabeth, assisted in the businesses and raised her two daughters.
Pat is survived by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Snook, of Redmond, WA; children William and wife Jacalyn O’Brien, Maura and husband Dale Griggs, Kathleen and husband Francis Seidl; and grandchildren, Sean and wife Mallory O’Brien, Daniel O’Brien, Joseph O’Brien, Gordon Griggs, Jon Griggs, Evelynn Griggs, Julia Griggs, Tony and wife Shannon Seidl, Fritz Seidl; great-granddaughter Corrina Griggs and many loving relatives and friends. Her husband of 59 years, Jim, passed away in January 2013. They were married in August 1953.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, Ohio, and Master’s in Physical Education from University of Washington. She taught at Western’s Campus school, local high schools, and was an American Red Cross trainer.
Pat had a lifelong interest in sports and teaching. She climbed Mt. Baker as a young teacher at Western. She won the BGCC annual woman’s championship 9 times, and hosted the Pat O’Brien Pro-Am golf tournament. Her heart for youth led to training Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and in leading a special needs scout troop. She and Jim loved to travel. They made a dozen trips to Ireland to gain understanding of Irish writers, visited the Middle East and journeyed to see cousins in Ohio and New Brunswick, Canada. Their honeymoon was spent bicycling through Europe and Ireland. Pat and Jim were life members of the Mount Baker Hiking Club. Pat served on committees that brought a public swimming pool to Bellingham and created Boulevard Park.
Pat loved people, and her life can be seen even past her death through the love held for her by her children, grandchildren, and friends who remember her warm, welcoming spirit, and adventurous personality. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Church, 1110 14th Street, in Bellingham on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 12 noon. Lunch reception following in the Parish Hall. The family is grateful to the staff at Emeritus at Fairhaven. Memorials may be made to the WWU Foundation, American Red Cross or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
