Robert A. Christman, age 88, passed away peacefully on July, 14, 2012 in Bellingham. He was born May 16, 1924 in Ann Arbor, MI to Arthur and Mary Christman. Bob was a Geology Professor at WWU from 1960 to 1994. He married Bess Riesenman in Denver, CO in 1953. Bob briefly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Bob’s undergraduate studies were at the University of Michigan and he earned his PhD at Princeton. His first job was as an Asst. Professor of Minerology at Cornell University. In 1960 Bob became the chair of Geology at WWU. As an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church since 1960, Bob served on the Parish council, sang in the choir, was an original committee member of the Potpourri of Art shows and coordinated the quilt raffles for 41 years. As a dedicated volunteer to Boy Scout Troop 40, Bob was an Assistant Scout Master for over 40 years, earned the Silver Beaver Award, and helped to start the original Christmas tree pick-up program in Bellingham. Bob loved to teach students and served as President and Board Member of the WA State Science Teachers, Editor of the Washington Science Teachers Assn. Journal and Executive Director of the National Assn. of Geoscience Teachers. Since 2002 Bob owned the Firehouse Performing Arts Center with his son Matthew, a historic community arts center and neighborhood gathering place. Bob also volunteered for the WWU Summer Stock and the Bellingham Theater Guild. Family was Bob’s first priority. He enjoyed making wine, gardening, cross country skiing, traveling, hiking, camping, reading mysteries, and spending time with his granddog Amber. He is survived by his loving wife Bess of 59 years and their children Mark Christman, Maribeth Joy and husband Mike, Matthew Christman and wife Alona, Maureen Christman and his sister Mary Jean Vallett. Memorials may be made to the Firehouse Performing Arts Center Association, 1314 Harris Ave, Bellingham, WA 98225. A Vigil Service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 18th at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Thursday, July 19th at 12 noon followed by a reception.
