Robert was born in Chemainus, BC, Canada to Alexander and Olive Stuart and was one of four children. He was home schooled until 6th grade. He was a graduate of Victoria High School, University of British Columbia, and the University of Wisconsin, where he was awarded a PhD.
He completed his dissertation at the Russian Research Center at Harvard, where he met Paul Gregory. Together they wrote seven editions of textbooks on the former Soviet Union and Comparative Economic Systems. Robert authored many articles on these areas of expertise. He was a Professor in the Economics Department at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, for 37 years. For 25 of those years he was the department chairman. He also served as a visiting professor at Princeton University for 15 years. He served a term as editor in chief of the Journal of Comparative Economic Studies.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, a son, a daughter, a grandson, a brother and seven nephews. He resided in Bellingham, Washington and Thetis Island, BC, Canada.
Private memorial services will be held in Victoria and in New Jersey. Since Robert’s cause of death was lung cancer, the family requests donations may be made to a cancer charity of one’s choice.
