Our beautiful mother and grandmother, Granny G, sadly passed away on January 23, 2023, at the age of 90. Sally Lee (Hildebrand) Anthony was born on May 5, 1932, to Manson and Mabel Hildebrand in Davenport, Iowa. She was the third daughter of four; in photos they were always lined up oldest to youngest: Virginia, Charlene, Sally, and Noreen.
After graduating from Davenport High School, she enrolled in the Iowa State Teachers College. She married her sweetheart, Glenn Anthony, in 1953 and together they had three children: Lynn (1955), Mark (1957), and Paul (1963). Glenn completed Chiropractic College in Davenport, IA and drawn by his love of fishing and hunting, the family moved to Bellingham, WA in 1960. After dedicating herself to raising their family, Sally returned to Western Washington University, completing her Teaching Degree in 1971. Her first marriage ended in 1977. Unexpectedly their oldest son Mark died in 1981.
Bellingham remained her home until she married Richard Simmons in 1983 and they moved to the Seattle area. Together they enjoyed traveling, riding motorcycles, and attending baseball games. Sally was trained as a care partner to assist Richard with his hemodialysis until she was widowed in 2003.
Sally loved to help people. For 10 years she was a seating host for the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. She told her most famous joke as a “semi-professional jokester” to over hundreds of children: “What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear!” After retiring from bookkeeping in Seattle she moved back to Bellingham to be closer to her family.
Sally loved listening to Polka music, doing crossword puzzles and was a self-proclaimed chocoholic. She was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness, who loved her family and friends dearly and will be missed deeply by all.
She is survived by her daughter Lynn (Jack), her grandchildren: Daniele (Shane), Matt (Katrina), Kent (Christy), Velicia (Jon), and Holly (Eric), seven great-grandchildren, her sister Noreen, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two older sisters and a son.
A memorial for Sally will be held at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall at 2935 Birchwood Ave, Bellingham, WA 98225, on Saturday, February 18th at 3pm.
Your memory is a keepsake
from which we’ll never part

but we have you in our hearts
