Stanley Samuelson,

July 24, 1924 — April 15, 2013

07/24/1924 – 04/15/2013
Stanley Samuelson, Jr. passed away at the age of 87 at his home in Bellingham, WA on the morning of April 15, 2013. He was born July 24, 1925 in Tucson, AZ to Stanley and Adele Samuelson. He grew up in Tucson and at 17 he joined the Merchant Marines in 1943 when the war was in high gear. Stanley became an officer at 19 and by the end of the war was a third mate, had seen every theater of war and sailed all seven seas. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad after the war in Tucson, AZ and in 1948 drove a 1936 Plymouth up the Al-Can highway to Alaska. Stanley worked for mining companies and on drilling rigs until he was drafted into the Korean War in 1950. After being discharged from the Army he went to work for the Alaska railroad. His aunt Bergit died in 1955 in Cedar Rapids, IA and while getting his aunt’s affairs in order he met Isabel and they were soon married. Stanley and Isabel lived in Fairbanks, AK while he worked on the DEW (Defense Early Warning) line and they raised a family. In 1961 they settled in Boise, ID and continued to commute to Alaska for work. He started commercial fishing in 1966 with crabbing in Kodiak, then gillnetting in Bristol Bay and finally gillnetting, long lining and seining in Prince William Sound. His boats and operations were based out of Cordova. If you could pull it out of the ocean Stanley has done it. He quit commercial fishing at the age of 81 and retired in Bellingham, WA. He was an avid hunter of Alaskan big game, a third degree black belt in judo, author of two books and a family man. He could show you where to fish, how to fish, how to work hard and with his sense of humor, have a good time doing it. He has cheated the sea, lived a long, wide, life and will be missed and remembered by many. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Isabel Samuelson, son Erwin Samuelson, daughter Barbara Roemmich, grandson Lance Samuelson, granddaughters Renae Roemmich and Lindsay Martz, and many relatives and friends. Stanley’s family will gather to lay him to rest in the family cemetery in Climax, MN.
