Steven J. Mura, 74, of Bellingham, WA passed away on November 19 in his home surrounded by family and loved ones.
Steve was born in Bellingham, WA on March 29, 1949 to Edward and Mary (MacDonald) Mura. Steve excelled academically, attending Assumption Catholic School and then Bellingham High School. He was accepted into West Point Military Academy, where he became the captain of the skydiving team and graduated in 1971. He loved his time at West Point, and often pointed out how it shaped the rest of his life.
After serving as an infantry officer at Fort Bragg, he was accepted into Samford University where he earned his Doctorate of Jurisprudence.
After 12 years of active military service, Steve moved back to Bellingham and began his law practice with friend and colleague Frank Chmelik. While building this practice he also hosted a radio show on KGMI called "Law Talk." Like most lawyers, he loved being able to talk endlessly into the airwaves.
In 1992, he was elected Superior Court Judge for Whatcom County, where he served for 20 years. He loved his job, his community, and being of service.
Steve was an avid pilot and enjoyed flying across country to reconnect with old West Point friends. Nothing made him happier than spending time at his family cabin, "The Ranch."
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Chris Mura, his children, Steven (Ali), Megan (Chad), Brian, and Danny, his siblings, Louann and Merek, his eight grandchildren, and too many to count nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A vigil will be held on Thursday, November 30 at 7pm at Westford Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Friday, December 1, at Church of the Assumption in Bellingham. A reception will follow at Shuksan Golf Club.
