d. August 20, 2011

09/29/1947-08/20/2011
Susan Shoemaker passed away August 20, 2011 at home with her family. She was a lifetime resident of Whatcom County, born September 29, 1947 in Bellingham to Florence and William “Bud” Winterburn. Susan graduated from Bellingham High School in 1965 and later graduated from Western Washington University. On November 3, 1972 she married Richard Shoemaker. Sue and Rick have lived in Custer for the last 38 years. Sue was very active in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church as a 5th grade religious education teacher. Sue loved arts and crafts and started quilting a few years ago, gifting several quilts to family and friends. She also loved walking with Rick and the dogs and taking photos of nature, especially the eagles at Semiahmoo. Sue enjoyed spending time with her grandkids: Veronica, Trevor & Morgan. Sue had a great love for animals including her horses and donkeys. Sue is greatly missed by her husband, Richard Shoemaker and her two children Kenneth Shoemaker & Stacey (Darren) Jones, as well as three grandchildren and sister: Sharon Calabrese and brothers: William Winterburn, Steve (Pat) Winterburn and Doug (Karen) Winterburn and numerous nieces and nephews. A Vigil Service will be held on Friday, August 26th at 7pm at Westford Funeral Home in Bellingham. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 11am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ferndale, followed by a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Whatcom Hospice, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center or St. Joseph’s Youth Group. Our family wishes to give thanks to the Hospice care nurses and to the nurses at the infusion center for their loving and special care. We also want to thank our friends for all the support they gave to Rick & Sue during her illness.
