Teresa "Terry" Brearley, 96, died on March 13, 2023, in the home she shared with her granddaughter and grandson-in-law in Bellingham, WA.
She was born in 1926 to Frank and Mary Hartson in Everett, WA. She attended schools in Everett and while at the community college, met her best friend, John "Jack" Brearley. They were married almost 50 years before he died in 1996.
After John graduated from Western Washington University they moved to Toppenish, WA where their two daughters Jackie and Michele were born. The family spent a year in Tucson, AZ where Terry received her B.A. from the University of Arizona. Returning to Toppenish both John and Terry entered the education field, where Terry acquired an M.A. from Ft. Wright College in Spokane and eventually retired after 27 years of teaching in the elementary schools - she loved her job!
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and as a church council secretary. Terry enjoyed her membership in the Fortnightly Literary Club and in Alpha Delta Kappa, a women’s teachers honorary. She served on the Civil Service Commission, received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Toppenish Rotary Club, was a regular blood donor, volunteered at school, was a Camp Fire Girls leader, and honored as educator of the year in 1983.
Terry is survived by her loving and encouraging daughter, Jackie Schooley, and six grandchildren who were the light of her life, they knew that their grandma would support them in their varied activities and send them home with cookies, Carie Schooley, Leanne Gillett, Mike Kraft, Eric Kraft, Justin Michael, and Jessica Seamans, plus eight great-grandchildren. Her sister Mary Ann Michaelson, and her sister-in-law Jeanette Hartson also survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, daughter, Michele, two brothers, Bill and Bob, and two sisters, Betty and Barbara.
She will lay to rest next to John, at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park, in Everett, WA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John and Teresa Brearley Rotary Scholarship Fund, PO Box 621, Toppenish, WA 98948.
