Verna E Sandell, age 92, of Bellingham, passed away December 28, 2011. She was born October 3, 1919 in Spokane WA, to Edwin and Josie Pettett. Verna graduated from Mount Vernon High School. After high school she worked in an insurance office and also sang with a band at various locations around Skagit County.
She married Floyd Sandell on August 18, 1941. Soon after they were married, Floyd started teaching. They lived in Longview for one year where daughter Linda was born and moved to Mount Vernon for 5 years where son Deane was born. In 1947, they moved to Bellingham. She and Floyd were members of the Bellingham Golf & Country Club and the Bellingham Yacht Club for many years.
Verna was a homemaker all of her married life. Early on she was active in the Lucy Lee League of St. Joseph Hospital. She was a devoted supporter of the Christian Children’s Fund and many other charities. Living on a dairy farm most of those years, she gardened, canned, sewed and raised two children. She was an avid reader and game player, and she delighted in her bridge club and friends. She loved her Corgis and feeding the birds. She also liked to raise tropical fish, crochet, sing and play the piano. Her favorite pastime, however, was spending time with her family. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Floyd, her loving & devoted husband of 68 years, preceded her in death in January 2010.
She is survived by her daughter Linda, her son Deane & wife Susan Sandell all of Bellingham; son- in- law Phil Thorsteinson of Marysville; former son-in-law Don Martinson of Bellingham; grandchildren Tyler and wife Heather Sandell of Seattle, Wendy & husband Jonathan Cogan of Portland & Kyle Martinson of Bellingham; great-grandchildren, Kaleb Martinson, Katie & Maya Cogan and Annika & Clara Sandell; sister Donna Rose, brother Dale Pettett, sister-in-law Gloria Knudsen; and numerous close nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Humane Society, 3710 Williamson Wy., B’ham 98226.
A celebration of Verna’s life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sunday February 5th, at 2pm, followed by a reception.
