Obituary
Viola Mooers, age 92, passed away May 28th, 2010 in Bellingham. She was born in Paterson, NJ on January 4th, 1918, the daughter of German and Russian silkweavers, Arthur and Gussie Schrotke. In her late teens Vi worked as a vault teller in New York and as a waitress in New Jersey. During WWII, she served as a Red Cross Air Raid Ward Captain in Peterson, N.J. Her daughter Helen was born in 1937.
Viola moved to California in 1947 where she met her husband Douglas in Santa Monica, CA; they married and lived together in Venice, CA, where they had a son, Douglas, Jr. In 1952, they moved to Topanga Canyon, CA, where she was a homemaker and den mother and learned to drive using a 1933 Chrysler Airflow. She loved to travel throughout the U.S., Canada, and England and was particularly fond of Catalina Island, San Diego, Vancouver BC and Las Vegas.
She lived in Malibu, CA for 50 years and was a member of Trancas Riders and Ropers, often bearing the American Flag on her horse, Beauty. She spent many hours walking her beloved white German shepherd, King. She loved to cook and was known for her cookies, pies, and “wine parties”. She returned to college in her 40's, earning a LVN, RN and AA at Santa Monica College. She was licensed as a Registered Nurse in California and worked many wards and the E.R. at the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles for 10 years. After retiring, she assisted Seniors throughout the Southern California area. In 1988, she was recognized by the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors as the Outstanding Senior Volunteer of the Year. She also received the San Gabriel Valley Dietary Managers Service Award for her Outstanding Service and
Contributions to Seniors. Vi was also a longtime member of the Catholic Church.
In 2004 she moved to Bellingham to be closer to her family, and spent her last 3 years at Highgate Assisted Living. She won many “stuffed animals” at Bingo which she graciously donated to Brigit Collins House and to Lydia Place. She also spent many hours enjoying the Food Network.
She was preceded in death by her husband Douglas Mooers, Sr. She is survived by her son Douglas Mooers (Cheryl Van Etten); daughter Helen Martin (Ed Hall); grandchildren Nick and Elizabeth Jerns, Tamara and Mike DePorter, Brenna and Dan Sartain, Marla and Jim Azinger, Susan Danforth, Joseph Pecarino and Randall Pecarino; 13 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
The family would like to recognize and deeply thank Dr. David Hansen, M.D. for his long time support of Viola, her family, and Elder Care.
Vigil Services will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Thurs. June 3rd at 7 PM. A Celebration of Vi’s life will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Sat. June 5th at 11 AM.

I will miss talking with you Mom. We shared so many good laughs over the years on the phone. Wish we were not so many miles away. Will always remember the trip to London the three of us. May God Bless you and keep you. You will always be in my heart. Love Helen

Vi loved singing hymns at Highgate on Thursday evenings. She sang with us for years. Her favorites were In the Garden and How Great Thou Art. She was always so kind to us. I will miss her.

What a lovely tribute to your dear Mom. I didn’t know her interesting history at all, but I did know of her sunny smile and sweet disposition. My contact with her was as a neighbor on Creekbend Lane.
