Violet Evelyn Downing, age 85 of Bellingham, passed away July, 22, 2011. She was born August 21, 1925 in Clyde, Alberta Canada.
Vi resided in Bellingham for more than 60 years and will be missed by her family and many good friends and acquaintances. She worked at the downtown Bellingham J.C. Penny’s in the 1960’s making lifelong friendships with the “Penny’s Bunch” from that era who met together for years later. She retired from Penny’s and the later in her 70’s, went back to work at the clothing store “Touch of Class” and then “Unique Maui Resort Wear” into her 80’s. She had a talent for fashion and always dressed with great class and was known for her gorgeous white hair.
She will be remembered by many as the Monday morning volunteer in the gift shop at St. Josephs for 20 years. Many others will remember Vi for her beautiful yard and flower boxes at her Meridian Street home. Thank you to all who took time to stop and compliment her on her lawn which she continued to mow with a push mower until her stroke in February 2010 at age 84.
Thanks to the Meridian Haggen employees for your kindness and special attention to Vi. She loved visiting with you all as she did her weekly grocery shopping. Finally, thank you to the staff at Christian Health Care Center who were patient and kind with Vi during one of the most difficult times of her life.
Vi was preceded in death by her husband William Downing and grandson Corey Downing. She is survived by son Dan (Kathi) Downing, son Dave (Wendy) Downing, daughter in law Sue Downing and grandsons Michael and Brian Downing. A Celebration of Vi’s life will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Wed., August 3rd at 11 AM followed by burial at Bayview City Cemetery.
