03/01/1918 – 09/02/2012
William Jess Johnson was born March 1, 1918 in St. Anthony Idaho, the eldest child of William A. and Mae Henderson Johnson.  He died in Bellingham, WA on September 2, 2012. He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1936 and attended both Ricks College (now BYU Idaho) and Utah State University, graduating in physiology.  He was a World War II veteran, serving in both the Marine Corps and the Navy in the Pacific.  After the war he earned a Masters in Public Health from UC Berkeley, graduating in 1947.  He spent his professional life primarily working for Lederle Labs, and later for Fisher Scientific as a rep for diagnostic testing materials for labs and hospitals.  He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty-eight years, Peggy Kalpakian Johnson, four children, Laura K. McCreary of Bellingham, Douglas Johnson of Port Hueneme, California, Helen Johnson of Mira Loma, California, Brian Johnson of Birch Bay, and two grandsons, Bear McCreary and Brendan McCreary, both of Los Angeles.
He was much admired and will be much missed.  The family requests in lieu of flowers a contribution to a charity of your choice.  The family also wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude for the warmth and care he received from everyone at Highland Care Center and from Whatcom Hospice.  A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 10 AM.
